In Singapore the price you see must already include GST β€” so the useful direction is backwards

Most GST calculators are built to add tax to a net price. In Singapore that is usually the wrong direction, because IRAS requires GST-registered businesses to display GST-inclusive prices to the public. What you see on the shelf, the menu or the website is the final price you pay.

So the calculation people actually need is extraction, and IRAS publishes the exact fraction for it: the output tax in a GST-inclusive payment is 9/109 of the total. On a $1,080 inclusive price that is $89.17 of GST, leaving $990.83 net. Taking 9% of $1,080 instead gives $97.20 β€” $8.03 too much on a single invoice, and a misstated output tax figure on your GST return.

One consequence of the two-step increase is still live in older contracts and subscriptions: supplies that straddle a rate change have their own transitional rules, and the rules written for the 7%β†’8% step were applied again to the 8%β†’9% step. If you are reconciling an invoice dated across 31 December 2023, the rate is not simply the rate on the invoice date.

Adding GST

To add GST to a net (pre-tax) price at the standard rate: gross = net Γ— 1.09. The GST is 9% of the net amount.

Removing GST

To find the GST already inside a gross (GST-inclusive) price: net = gross Γ· 1.09, then GST = gross βˆ’ net. Equivalently, the GST is 9 ⁄ 109 of the gross β€” which is IRAS's published 9/109 tax fraction.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Singapore GST rate?

The standard rate is 9%. GST rose to 8% on 1 January 2023 and to 9% on 1 January 2024.

Why is 9% of the gross price the wrong answer?

Because GST is charged on the net price, not on the total. On a $100 gross amount at 9%, the GST is $8.26, not $9.00 β€” the net is $91.74. Use the "Remove GST" mode above and the calculator does it for you.

Why do displayed prices already include GST?

IRAS requires GST-registered businesses to show GST-inclusive prices in their price displays to the public, so that the advertised figure is the final one. Some business-to-business quotes are still given exclusive of GST β€” check which basis a quote is on.
