In Switzerland, the federal government is the small player
Most countries have one dominant income tax set nationally. Switzerland inverts that. Federal tax is real but modest; the canton โ and within it your municipality โ does most of the collecting. On a CHF 100,000 salary in Zurich, federal tax accounts for roughly 15% of the total income tax bill and the canton for 85%. At CHF 60,000 the federal share is just 8%.
That means the single biggest determinant of Swiss take-home pay is not your salary band โ it is your address.
The same salary, six cantons, CHF 12,280 apart
| Canton | Federal tax | Cantonal tax | Take-home |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zug | CHF 1,958 | CHF 6,428 | CHF 80,701 |
| Zurich | CHF 1,958 | CHF 11,453 | CHF 75,676 |
| Geneva | CHF 1,958 | CHF 17,196 | CHF 69,933 |
| Vaud | CHF 1,958 | CHF 17,497 | CHF 69,632 |
| Bern | CHF 1,958 | CHF 17,727 | CHF 69,401 |
| Basel | CHF 1,958 | CHF 18,708 | CHF 68,420 |
Identical gross pay of CHF 100,000, identical federal tax, and a spread of CHF 12,280 a year โ nearly 18% of net income โ purely from which canton you live in. Zug's cantonal bill is barely a third of Basel's. This is why Swiss salary negotiations and relocation decisions routinely turn on the commune, and why a pay rise that comes with a move can leave you worse off. Your pension contribution rises as you age
Here is a feature with no real parallel elsewhere. BVG โ the mandatory occupational pension, the "second pillar" โ charges a contribution rate that increases with your age band. Your salary can stay flat for thirty years while this deduction grows:
| Age band | BVG contribution (CHF 100,000, Zurich) | Take-home |
|---|---|---|
| 25โ34 | CHF 2,249 | CHF 76,393 |
| 35โ44 | CHF 3,213 | CHF 75,676 |
| 45โ54 | CHF 4,820 | CHF 74,475 |
| 55+ | CHF 5,783 | CHF 73,751 |
Two colleagues doing the same job for the same CHF 100,000, one aged 28 and one aged 58, take home CHF 2,643 a year differently. It is not a tax and the money is yours โ it accumulates in your pension account, and your employer matches at least what you pay. But it does mean the cash in your account shrinks as you get older unless your salary rises to compensate, which is worth knowing before you assume a flat salary means flat spending power.
BVG also applies only to a coordinated portion of salary โ a band with both a floor and a ceiling โ so it is not a flat percentage of everything you earn. Below an entry threshold there is no BVG at all, which is why low-paid and part-time work often has no second-pillar coverage.
Three deductions before any tax
- AHV/IV/EO โ 5.3% of your entire salary, with no ceiling. The Swiss state pension, disability and loss-of-earnings insurance.
- ALV โ unemployment insurance at 1.1%, capped.
- NBU โ non-occupational accident insurance at about 1.3%, capped. Employer-arranged but employee-paid.
All three come out before income tax is calculated, which is why Swiss taxable income is meaningfully lower than gross.
What this calculator covers โ and its real limits
We label the Swiss figures an estimate, and we mean it more strongly here than for any other country on this site:
- Municipal multipliers vary within every canton. Two towns in the same canton can differ by several percentage points of tax. Our cantonal figures represent a typical municipality, not yours specifically.
- Six cantons only โ Zug, Zurich, Geneva, Bern, Vaud and Basel. There are 26.
- Single, no children, no church tax. Marital status, children and church membership all change the cantonal bill materially.
- No deductions applied โ pillar 3a contributions, commuting costs, childcare and insurance premiums are all deductible and not modelled.
- Health insurance is not included, and it is a large, compulsory, per-person cost that you pay privately rather than through payroll. Any comparison with countries where health cover comes out of payroll is incomplete without it.
- Quellensteuer โ withholding tax for many permit holders โ follows separate tariffs.
Federal rates come from the ESTV. For a binding figure use your canton's own official calculator. If something looks wrong, please tell us โ our methodology explains how each calculator is checked and where its limits lie.
